Online Small Engine Repair Degrees

When your car breaks down you know just where to go, but when your motorboat breaks down, or your chainsaw stops working, you need a small engine repair specialist.  Small engine repair focuses on the types of engines found in outdoor power equipment, motorcycles, boats, and power tools.

During a typical small engine repair, the mechanic will inspect the engine, check the brakes, electrical systems, fuel injection systems, plugs, carburetors, and other parts. Some mechanics who work in large repair shops will also use computer diagnostic equipment to determine the problem with the engine.

Small engine mechanics must be good problem solvers, and have good analytical skills.  You must also be good at working with your hands, and be physically fit.  Work in small engine repair may be seasonal, as outdoor recreational equipment and tools are primarily serviced during the warmer months of the year.  However, many small engine repair specialists will take engine overhaul projects during the winter, or service winter vehicles and equipment such as snowmobiles and snow blowers.

Most employers require small engine repair mechanics to complete some type of formal training or degree program.  Because there are not many post-secondary small engine repair programs, many small engine repair mechanics will learn on the job in combination with online courses.  Manufacturers and distributors of vehicles and equipment will also hold courses relating to the servicing of their product.

For those who have completed a training program, the job outlook is good and salary varies depending upon experience and specialization.
