Home Remodeling

Home remodeling is usually done by a licensed professional carpenter or contractor. General contractors work on all kinds of projects, from bathroom remodels to major office buildings to new homes. Carpenters, who work with wood, make furniture and carve surfaces within the home. Students looking for a career in home remodeling need to be well-rounded engineers, problem-solvers, and hard workers.

Training in Home Remodeling

Training in home remodeling is usually best accomplished on the job. Many construction workers or people who wish to become contractors or construction managers, get their first taste of the business pouring concrete or hanging shingles. For a formal apprenticeship, you must be 18 years old and agree to a 3 or 4 year program with a firm or individual. Some individuals have training in home remodeling from a community college or vocational school.

Careers in Home Remodeling

As a general contractor or carpenter, you can join a company or start your own home remodeling company. If you have a degree in some type of business or management, you will be prepared to contract out work and tasks, manage payroll and job schedules, promote your services, and most of all get in there and get your hands dirty. Carpenters typically earn hourly salaries between $15 and $18 per hour, doing construction on homes and offices. General contractors' salaries vary with each project and sometimes with the weather! Construction management salaries run from $60,000 to $100,000 per year.
