Floral Design

Florists make arrangements of live and silk flowers to order. Wreaths, centerpieces, bouquets and corsages all take some skill with floral design. By using ribbon, flower tape and different kinds of blooms and greenery, floral designers make breathtaking arrangements for weddings, parties and for sale in a shop. A good eye for design and a sense of color and shape aesthetics plus proper training enables lots of creative types to take advantage of a career in floral design.

Training in Floral Design

Floral design is the only design industry where you do not need an official degree, but passing an accreditation exam after your training will help your career. A training program for floral design is still a good idea, because to get a certificate in floral design you need only a high school diploma. Within a few weeks or a year, you will know different types of flowers, color and shapes, bows and ribbons, tape and how to keep your arrangements fresh. Some community colleges offer associate or bachelor degrees in floral design, horticulture or floriculture.

Careers in Floral Design

Most florist shops are small and local, selling fresh flowers and taking orders for events. Many floral designers work long stretches to fill large orders for centerpieces, wreaths and bouquets for weddings or parties. Depending on the season and the size of the order, floral designers could work nights or overtime to make every decoration special. Many floral designers are self-employed and manage all the details of their shops, including personnel changes, ordering and restocking flowers, and bookkeeping. Floral designers earn a yearly wage of $15,000 to $30,000.
