Online Graphic Design Degrees

There's great news for graphic design students. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has predicted that graphic designers will have the greatest job prospects of all the design occupations through the year 2014. And among graphic designers, those with web site design and animation experience will have the best overall employment prospects, according to the BLS.

Graphics designers work in both digital electronic and print media in the communications, manufacturing, sales, healthcare, educational, and entertainment industries. Whether they are creating a branding scheme or logo for a major corporation or designing a business card and small website for a neighborhood company, graphic designers remain in high demand with design firms, advertising, public relations and media organizations, and in private consulting companies.

If you're considering applying for a training program in graphic design, you can join the industry from most any level – whether you receive a design certificate, undergraduate, or graduate degree. Professional schools, graphics trade schools, junior colleges, and universities all have a wide range of training programs with specializations in graphic design.

The BLS reports that 228,000 graphic designers worked in the country in 2004, with three fourths of them as wage and salary workers. Three out of every ten are self-employed and work as contractors and design consultants.

New graphic design job opportunities should be especially good, the BLS says, in interactive media design for websites, for computer games, telephone and PDA content, and in television and video entertainment. Median graphic design salaries were at $42,500 in 2005, with accomplished free lance designers earning $60,000 – $100,000 and more.
